HEIC vs JPG: Which Photo Format Should You Use?

    Published 12 January 2026·Updated 20 June 2026·6 min read

iPhones save photos as HEIC to keep quality high and files small - but that format still trips up Windows PCs, websites, and email. Here is when to keep HEIC and when to convert to JPG.

    What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It is based on the HEIF standard and uses modern compression to store a photo at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG, with no visible loss in quality. Apple also uses it to hold clever extras like depth data and Live Photo frames.

The catch is compatibility. HEIC is excellent inside Apple's ecosystem, but the moment you send a photo to a Windows PC, upload it to an older website, or attach it to an email, you may find it will not open. That single friction point is why 'HEIC to JPG' is one of the most searched conversions on the web.

    What is JPG?

JPG (also written JPEG) has been the default photo format for decades. It is a lossy format, meaning it discards some detail to keep files small, but the trade-off is barely noticeable for everyday photos. Crucially, it opens on absolutely everything - every browser, phone, printer, and photo app understands JPG.

JPG has no transparency channel and it degrades a little each time you re-save it, so it is not ideal for logos, screenshots, or files you plan to edit repeatedly. For sharing photographs, though, it remains the safest possible choice.

HEIC vs JPG at a glance

Both formats are lossy and neither supports transparency, so the real differences come down to size and compatibility:

    • File size: HEIC is roughly 40-50% smaller than JPG at similar quality.
    • Quality: Very close at normal settings; HEIC can hold more colour depth.
    • Compatibility: JPG wins decisively - it opens everywhere; HEIC often does not.
    • Editing and sharing: JPG is the universal choice for uploads and email.
    • Storage: HEIC saves space on your device without sacrificing quality.

When should you convert HEIC to JPG?

Convert to JPG whenever the photo needs to leave the Apple world. Common triggers include uploading to a website or CMS that rejects HEIC, emailing photos to someone on Windows, submitting an image to a form, or editing in software that cannot read HEIC.

Keep HEIC when the photo stays on your Apple devices and you want to save storage. There is no benefit to bulk-converting your entire library to JPG unless you specifically need the compatibility - you would just use more space.
